Today, 14 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

14 Dec 1979: Two members from 5 SAI were Killed in Action near Nkongo when their Platoon was ambushed by a numerically superior force of SWAPO/PLAN insurgents near a village waterhole. Some soldiers were still drawing water when the enemy opened fire with Soviet B10 Recoilless Guns, RPG-7 Rocket Launchers and Machine-guns before speeding away in vehicles. Rifleman Victor was killed instantly and Rifleman Appelgryn severely wounded when hit by shrapnel that deflected off his shoulder blade and punctured his lungs. Three quarters of the platoon were wounded and when his mates came to assist him, he told them to leave him and assist the more badly wounded instead. He succumbed to his wounds shortly afterwards. The casualties were:

  • 76293679BG Rifleman Willie Jacobus Appelgryn. He was 19.
  • 76293676BG Rifleman Daniel Jacobus Victor. He was 19.

14 Dec 1981: 79546321BG Sapper Jan Adriaan Crous from 25 Field Engineer Squadron was Killed in Action while driving a Buffel Troop Carrier when the vehicle detonated a boosted Soviet TMA-3 Cheese mine on Oom Willie se Pad. He was 20.

14 Dec 1981: 76902311SP Rifleman Fernando Chameia from 32 Battalion was Killed in Action in a landmine explosion on the road between Ongiva and Chiede during operations in Southern Angola. He was 27.

14 Dec 1981: 68343748LL Signaler Abraham Johannes Nortje from SALNET accidentally drowned while crossing a river during a foot patrol near the Cut-line. He was 29.

14 Dec 1984: 80495583BG Rifleman Theodore Marais from North West Command was killed after being accidentally run over by a military vehicle while at Potchefstroom. He was 20.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Gd Michael CHIVINGE, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1977 – Rfn Stephen Charles Edward "Chaz" DAWKINS, B Coy, 1st Bn, RR, was killed in an ambush while on university vacation call-up. Charles did his national service with the RLI in 1976.

1979 – FR Leonard William "Len" JELLEY, PATU, BSAP, died from wounds received from a landmine detonation on the Gwampa Road, Lupane district, Op Tangent, at the age of 38. Two vehicles carrying two PATU sticks were responding to an Agric Alert call from the Lupane Police Station, when the second vehicle hit a landmine. CTs then also opened fire from two directions. Stephen-James Murray, who was also in the vehicle, who, took control of the situation, was with Len when he died.

1979 – DSA Fungai Wellington MLAMBO, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died from wounds received in a contact.

1979 – FR Better SAIMWEMBA, PATU, BSAP, was killed in a CT action in the Mangula area, Op Hurricane, at the age of 22.
