Today, 20 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

20 Dec 1979: 76927607SP Rifleman Antonio Cahasa from 32 Battalion was accidentally killed during a follow-up patrol in Southern Angola when the Buffel Troop Carrier he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a Hyena vehicle. He was 33. 

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1975 – DA Shadreck Kende MULEMBA, Regular, Intaf, died on active service.

1976 – FR Kevin CONNOLLY, FR J. NDHLOVU and FR K. NYONI, of PR, BSAP, and NSPO Trevor THREADINGHAM and NSPO Thomas William WALKER, Uniform, BSAP, were all killed in an attack by CTs on a police camp in the Mucheni area of Binga district, Op Tangent. Their stick had been sent to investigate a CT presence in the area, and at the end of the day they stopped for the night at an old Roads Dept camp. At about 0500 hrs the following morning, their camp came under attack. Caught unaware, in the ensuing one-sided firefight, five lost their lives. The stick leader, wounded through the leg, managed to escape and caught a bus to Binga to fetch help.

1976 – L/Cpl Aubrey Charles MURPHY, 6(Indep) Coy, RR, died in a vehicle accident in the South East operational area, aged 19.

1977 – Lt Mark Harold LANGERMANN, 4th Bn, RR, was killed in an ambush in Mozambique whilst returning to Rhodesia from an operation known as “Parking Ticket.”

1977 – Sgt Doba Muchazipi Leonard MAHASO, Traffic, BSAP, died on active service.

1978 – Aux Cst John Marozva MATARE, BSAP, died on active service.

1979 – Gd K. MISE, RHQ Charlie, Op Repulse GF, died on active service.

1979 – Cpl Livingstone Simba CHATIKOBO, Regular, Intaf, and DSA Musarari Johannes MUGUMBATE, Kp Prtn, Intaf, were both killed in an ambush.
