Today, 29 December, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

29 Dec 1981: 74290719BT Rifleman James Clark Cromhout from 2 Parachute Battalion was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Southern Angola. He was 23.

29 Dec 1983: 80621758CK Rifleman Jacobus Johannes Adonis from the South African Cape Corps was Killed in Action in Northern Owamboland during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents. He was 20.

29 Dec 1983: 78339426PE Corporal Sarel Johannes Reynders from 3 Squadron was killed in a private motorcycle accident, in Pretoria. He was 21.

29 Dec 1983: 79400768BG Private Johan Coghill from the South African Medical Corps was killed in a military vehicle accident at De Doorns. He was 20.

29 Dec 1992: 91659672AR Rifleman Abraham Mohlolo Khoathela from 44 Parachute Regiment was killed in a military vehicle accident at the Soweto off-ramp while traveling on the Potchefstroom Road . He was 24.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1972 – Cpl Norman David Richard "Bog-Rat" MOORE, Spt Grp, 1st Bn, RLI, died in Salisbury Central Hospital from injuries received from a landmine explosion on 23 December near Whistlefield Farm Centenary, at the age of 29. As a result of an attack by ZANLA CTs on 21 December on Altena Farm in the Centenary area, elements of the SAS and Spt Grp RLI were deployed to the Centenary police station. The following night, a nearby homestead on Whistlefield Farm was also attacked by CTs, precipitating a large combined SAS/RLI and BSAP search the following morning for the CTs. Responding to a sighting of spoor to the west of Whistlefield Farm, Lt Ian Buttenshaw, sitting on the bonnet of an RLI International truck, directed the vehicle down a track. As they turned off the main road, the right rear wheel detonated a landmine, seriously injuring Cpl Norman Moore and Tpr Pete Botha. Tpr Botha lost both his legs.

1974 – Sgt Maj Mudoni GWATIDZO, Uniform, BSAP, was killed in a vehicle accident on the Salisbury/Umtali road.

1977 – PO Kenneth Andrew Gower, PR, BSAP, died on active service.

1977 – Act L/Cpl Toperson MUTARGOZA and L/Cpl Crispen NGOMANYONI, both of A Coy, 2nd Bn, RAR, died of gunshot wounds wound when their vehicle was ambushed by 30 ZANLA CTs in the Mshawasha African Purchase Area just south of Ft Victoria, Op Repulse.

1977 – DSA Mitsho SIBANDA, Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

1977 – FR Kapiyawo SIRIVA, PR, BSAP, died after falling off the back of a truck which was en route from Bindura to Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane.

1978 – Sgt Mervyn SADLER, RIC, was shot in a vehicle ambush whilst travelling with Lionel "Tubby" Reynolds on the main Beitbridge/Bulawayo road, Op Tangent. They had completed their call-up in Beitbridge and were returning to Bulawayo in a Unimog vehicle when they were ambushed by a gang of seven terrorists near Mazunga. Only two bullets struck the vehicle, one killing Mervyn instantly.

1978 – Gd Jimmy SALADI, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

1978 – Pte Peter Thomas SMITH, 2nd Bn, RDR, died in a shooting incident, aged 23 years.

1978 – Pte Lovemore TOTOHWIYO, 2nd Bn, RAR, died on active service.
