Today, 15 January, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

15 Jan 1981: Two members from 1 Parachute Battalion were Killed in Action during a fierce contact with a numerically superior FAPLA and PLAN force while supporting 32 Battalion elements during the Battle of Cuamato in Southern Angola. The Paratroopers had retreated in order to re-group when they were again subjected to heavy enemy mortar fire. Truter was mortally wounded in the neck by shrapnel and died in his mates arms. Sergeant Wessels was killed instantly. The casualties were:

  • 75339440PE Sergeant Louis Theodorus Hermanus Wessels. He was 22.
  • 73484347BG Rifleman Leonard Truter. He was 22.

15 Jan 1982: 81956807HK Rifleman Faustinus Mushanambango from 202 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with PLAN insurgents. He was 25

15 Jan 1984: 81122756BG Gunner Gilderoy Kruger from 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment Died of Wounds accidentally sustained at Oshivello. While cleaning 20mm Anti Aircraft cannon after returning from Ops Askari, a High Explosive round was found to be stuck in the breech of one of the cannons. During efforts to remove it, the round exploded, fatally wounding him in the stomach. He was 18.

15 Jan 1987: Two members from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K (Koevoet) were Killed in Action during a contact with PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. They were:

  • Special Constable Mathais Fesinago. He was 27.
  • Special Constable Shivelekeni Dhilimbulukweni. He was 29.

    RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

    1972 – Cpl Dennis Arthur TINGLE, Regular Army, died in Bulawayo Central Hospital from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on the Bulawayo/Salisbury road. He was 29 years old.

    1976 – Snr Ass Comm William John "Bill" CALLOW PMM, Uniform, BSAP, died on active service.

    1977 – Rfn Kevin Christopher GREEN, RDR, died in a shooting accident, aged 19 years.

    1977 – NSPO George VENTURAS, GC, BSAP, was killed in an ambush in the Belingwe area, at the age of 20. George, serving with Belingwe Ground Coverage, was on vehicle patrol at the time with a station constable. As he slowly coaxed his Land Rover up a steep hill, the road covered in loose gravel, they were ambushed from a well-chosen site by the terrorists. The vehicle slid back and came to a stop in the killing ground, where the terrorists laid down heavy small-arms fire into George and his vehicle. The constable managed to escape uninjured.

    1978 –Pte Onias ZINYAKATIRI, 2 Bn, RAR, died on active service.

    1979 – Pte M. CHIVASA, HQ, 1 Bde, was killed in a CT action.

    1979 – Gd Jack NDHLOVU, PV Prtn Group, GF, was killed in a CT action.

    1979 – FR Patrick Yotamu ZIMBA, PATU, BSAP, was killed in an accident whilst on operational duty at the age of 47.

    1980 – Pte Norbert MUSHONGA, D Coy, 2nd Bn, RR, died of injuries received in a vehicle accident.
