Today, 17 January, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

17 Jan 1949: P10736 Signalman John Lamb Fraser from HMSAS Natal was accidentally killed while swimming at Salisbury Island in Durban. He dived into shallow water and broke his neck when his head struck the bottom. He was 19.

17 Jan 1972: 4187 Air Lieutenant Guy Munton-Jackson, a South African National serving with 7 Squadron Rhodesian Air Force, was killed during Operation Grapple when his Alouette III Helicopter R5077 crashed at 03h00 in the morning near Gwelo while flying in extremely poor weather conditions. He was 26.

17 Jan 1977: 71349229KT Rifleman Johannes Jesajus Botha from Springs Commando was critically wounded during July 1976 while stationed at Katima Mulilo when he was struck in the abdomen by a bullet resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle. He was evacuated to 1 Military Hospital but he never recovered sufficiently to ever be discharged from the hospital. He sadly succumbed to his wounds nearly six months later on 17 January 1977 after complications set in. He was 21.

17 Jan 1977: 73290587BA Rifleman Edward Leslie Mayo from 5 SAI was accidentally shot dead by a fellow soldier while preparing an ambush east of the Kwando River. He was 19.

17 Jan 1985: Special Constable Shopeke Hatutale from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Unit: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 32.

17 Jan 1988: 86106598HG Rifleman Dumisani Ngubani from 121 Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident in Durban. He was 24.

17 Jan 1990: 89077085CK Rifleman Johan Bush from the 2nd Battalion South African Cape Corps was killed in a military vehicle accident between Bray and Mosita. He was 17.

 

      RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

      1972 - Flt Sgt - Tech/Gnr Peter Garden (aged 28), No 7 Sqn RhAF, KOAS.

      1972 - Air Lt – Plt Guy Munton-Jackson (aged 26), No 7 Sqn RhAF, KOAS.
      ( Both airmen above were KOAS in an air accident at 03:00 hrs whilst flying an Alouette IIIB R5077 in heavy weather near Gwelo, Op Grapple.

      1974 – Pte Stephen Severino (aged 26), 1st Bn RAR, KIA by a gunshot wound in a contact, Centenary, Op Hurricane.

      1975 – Rfn John Darley (aged 19), Depot RhA, KOAS from severe head injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on the Rusape/Inyazura road.

      1977 – Cst Erick Ncube (aged 22), GC BSAP, Murdered.

      1977 – D Cst Nhlalo Ntini (aged 37), SB BSAP, Murdered.
      (Both policemen above were abducted and murdered by terrorists whilst on ground cover duties, Wankie TTL, Op Tangent.)

      1979 - SB Reservist Alan Keith (aged 22), CID BSAP, KIA from wounds received earlier in a contact.

      1979 – Rfn Phillip Visagie, C Coy, 1st Bn RR, KIA.

      1979 – L/Cpl Bethrod Zhonja, 1st Bn RR, Murdered by terrorists whilst off duty.
