Today, 23 January, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

23 Jan 1975: WP197 Woman Police Officer Marsha Odette Brown, a South African National working in CID Drugs Section, Rhodesian British South Africa Police, was killed in a motor vehicle accident in Salisbury while on official duty. She was 22.

23 Jan 1979: 26006R Field Reservist Thomas Lionel Scott, a South African National serving in the Rhodesian British South Africa Police Reserve collapsed and died after apparently suffering a fatal heart attack. He was 72.

23 Jan 1981: 77374536BG Rifleman Aubrey John Botha from 11 Commando Regiment died from gunshot wounds accidentally sustained while on special duty at Umtata. He was 19.

23 Jan 1981: 77309953BG Rifleman Dieter Otto Haase from the South West Africa Infantry Battalion SWATF was killed in a private motor vehicle accident approximately 20km South of Kalkrand in South West Africa while on a weekend pass. He was 20.

23 Jan 1982: 8254375PE Private (Miss) Karen Mona van Rensburg from the Administrative Service Corps was killed in a private motor vehicle accident in Voortrekkerhoogte while on official duty. She was 19.

23 Jan 1984: 81059750BG Corporal Johannes Hendrik Roets from 4 SAI was Killed in Action when his Buffel Troop Carrier detonated a landmine at Techamutete in Southern Angola during Ops Askari. He was thrown out of the vehicle by the force of the explosion and he was crushed when the vehicle rolled onto him. He was 19.

23 Jan 1986: 882423070BG Rifleman Deon Francis Du Toit from 3 SAI was killed in a military vehicle accident. He was 19.

23 Jan 1987: 83348276BG Corporal Marthinus Petrus van Loggerenberg from 4 SAI died from injuries received when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned in the Kabokweni Township near Nelspruit during anti-riot patrol duties. Despite all efforts to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries approximately 2 hours later. He was 19.

23 Jan 1988: Four members from 54 Battalion were Killed in Action during a fierce engagement with a numerically superior force of FAPLA and SWAPO/PLAN troops in South Eastern Angola. 
The casualties were:

  • 85092385PC Corporal Dawid Petersen. He was 22.
  • 87954533CK Rifleman Joseph Brian Harker. He was 25.
  • 87092383CK Rifleman Phillip Dawid Matroos. He was 22.
  • 87959771CK Rifleman Alfred Snyders. He was 23.

23 Jan 1989: Seaman (Marine) P. Thangavalu from the South African Marines was killed instantly as a result of a gunshot wound to the head, accidentally self-inflicted shortly after he returned to the Marine Base at Wenela after completing a Patrol. He was 19.

23 Jan 1991: 90065129CK Rifleman Fanie Johan Jeneke from the South African Cape Corps was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Scottburgh. He was 18.

      RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

      1970 – Sgt Alec MAMBETSHA, Uniform, BSAP, died from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on Mafeking Road, Bulawayo. He was 34 years old.

      1975 – WPO Marsha Odette BROWN, CID - Drugs Sec, BSAP, died in a vehicle accident in Salisbury. She was 19 years old.

      1976 – Rfn James Jurie KRIEK, 6th Bn, RR, was killed in a shooting accident in the North East border area. Died aged 38.

      1978 – Ext Asst Samuel THEBE, ADF, Intaf, was murdered by CTs.

      1978 Rfn Trevor George WATTS and Sgt Ian Douglas WOOD, both of C Coy, 9th Bn, RR, were killed in a mortar pit at Vila Salazar when a mortar from Malvernia, Mozambique, exploded.

      1979 – DSAs Douglas MAKUMIRE and Lewisam TEKENENDE, both of Kp Prtn, Intaf, died on active service.

      1979 – Pte Mastaff MUTANGA, 2(Indep) Coy, RAR, died from wounds received in a contact near Karoi, Op Hurricane. He was casevaced to Kariba where he subsequently died.

      1979 – FR Thomas Lionel SCOTT, PR, BSAP, died on active service.

      1979 – DSA Fireyi SITHOLE, ARU Chipinga, Intaf, died from wounds received in a contact, Op Thrasher.
