Today, 30 January, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

30 Jan 1964: Two members from 5 SAI accidentally drowned in a boating accident at Ladysmith. They were:

  • AT22564 Rifleman Johannes Frederick Kies. He was 19
  • AT19453 Rifleman Cornelius Marthinus Du Plooy. He was 19

30 Jan 1981: Three members of 5 (6) Reconnaissance Regiment were Killed in Action during a Special Forces Raid on the African National Congress Headquarters in Maputo, Mozambique during Operation Bean Bag. They were:

  • 80022536PP Sergeant Robert Louis Hutchinson. He was 24.
  • 80013444PP Sergeant Ian Suttill. He was 22.
  • 80021017PP Lance Corporal James King Park. He was 21.

30 Jan 1983: 82900846SWK Rifleman R.R. Kufuna from 202 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with PLAN insurgents. He was 23 

      RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

      1977 – Rfn Bernard William RAWSTRONE, I Coy, 10th Bn, RR, was killed in an accidental explosion. He was 28 years old.

      1978 – Res PO Vivian Terence Murray BAKER, PR, BSAP, was killed in an armed robbery, aged 35. Vivian, together with a Mr Angus Fadness, was murdered during a bank payroll robbery 25 km from Salisbury on the Arcturus road.

      1978 – Rfn George Herbert DYSON, 5th Bn, RR, was killed by "friendly fire". George was part of a stick that had been assigned to all-round defence of a broken down military vehicle. That night he had informed one of the new conscripts that he was going a few metres away to relieve himself. Sadly, this message was not heeded, and he was shot and killed by a member of the stick as he returned to their position.

      1979 – Spr John CHIMUKONDE, 4 Engr Trp, RhE, was killed in a CT action.

      1979 – DAs Vernon HAMANDISHE and Alec SIBANDA Alec, both Regular Intaf, died on active service.

      1980 – Gd T. Munjayi, PV Prtn Group, GF, died on active service.

      Baker and Fadness were robbed of the Arcturus mine payroll and murdered by Berwick James on 30th April 1978, not 30th January. See my website under Mashonaland East www.zimfieldguide.com
