One of the unit's most highly decorated soldiers, Sgt Head Wuranda, SCR, BCR, had been abducted by CTs whilst he was on leave at home in the Nyajena TTL. Head was never seen again, but tragically it was discovered that it was his own father who sold him out to the CTs, and since then, Head's wife had been treated very badly in their home village. CO Lt-Col Ron Reid-Daly then made the decision to uplift Head's wife from the Nyajena to home her in the Inkomo Barracks married quarters. A party of 12 Selous Scouts , led by the RSM, left in two heavily armed vehicles to carry out the operation. Early the following afternoon, they left Head's home, having picked up his wife and her belongings. They used the same access road on their return, and at 16:10, the two vehicles drove into a well-sited ZANLA ambush, and in the heavy cross-fire, four were killed instantly and the fifth died of his wounds en route to Ft Victoria Hospital.
