Today, 7 February, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

07 Feb 1968: 65416976PE Air Mechanic Phillip Johannes Joubert from 24 Squadron was shot dead while on guard duty when he was struck by a bullet resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldier’s rifle. He was 19.

07 Feb 1973: Two members from the Infantry School Instructor Staff were killed instantly in Oudtshoorn when a stockpile of old unstable explosives that they were preparing for demolition, accidentally detonated. The casualties were:

  • 05074414E Warrant Officer Class 1 Lukas Petrus Jacobus Steenkamp. He was 45.
  • 05477799E Staff Sergeant Pieter Paul van Jaarsveld. He was 30.

07 Feb 1978: 76455690PE Gunner Abraham Hattingh from 4 Artillery Regiment was killed instantly at Potchefstroom during a violent storm when the electric floor polisher he was using to polish the barracks floor, was struck by lightning. He was 17.

07 Feb 1987: 83342097BG Trooper Johann Labuschagne from 61 Mechanised Battalion died during a two week Infantry training exercise at Oshivello. After days of dry practice formations, live ammunition was issued. During the first live fire formation, the Ratel’s dropped into V-formation. Unfortunately one of the LMG machine gunners did not realise his weapon safety catch was off and before the order was received to move, he tickled the trigger, accidentally letting off a burst. Labuschagne, who was standing directly ahead of him, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was killed instantly. He was 19.

07 Feb 1989: 85356046BG Sapper Ian Steward Hanslo from the School of Engineers was killed while on guard duty at the Unit’s main gate when he was accidentally run over by a 10-ton truck. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 – Pte George MANDIVENGEREYI, 1st Bn, RAR, died from a gunshot wound to the head, Centenary area, Op Hurricane, aged 29.

1976 – DA Farirai Hakudzokwe CHIPUNZI, Regular Intaf, died from gunshot wounds received in a vehicle ambush on the Nyakasora Road, Rushinga, Op Hurricane, aged 25.

1978 – DSAs Roy Patrick CHANUHWA and Mtshayeli Philemon TSHUMA, both of Kp Prtn, Intaf, were murdered by CTs whilst on R&R in the Tjolotjo district, Op Tangent.

1978 – L/Cpl Peter John "Mosey" COWAN, Mtr Tp, 5th Bn, RR, died in a vehicle ambush in the Makuti area, Urungwe district, Op Hurricane.

1978 – Rfn Aleck DE BARRETO, 2(Indep) Coy, RAR, died on active service.

1978 – Tpr Simon LE VIEUX, 2 Cdo, 1st Bn, RLI, died from wounds received in action. He was 19 years old.

1979 – L/Cpl Nicholas Edward Swannell BARBER and Tpr Gordon Roy MACMILLAN, both of C Sqn, SAS, were killed in an accidental explosion whilst laying a landmine during Op Inhibit in the Mapai area of the Gaza Province of Mozambique.

1979 – Spr Thomas WURAYI, 6 Sqn, RhE, died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in an ambush.

1980 – Pte Martin MTINSI, 2nd Bn, RR, died from a gunshot wound.

1980 – Col Sgt David "Dave" SPARKES, G/Scts, died in a shooting incident.
