Today, 9 February, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

09 Feb 1977: 72253644KT Rifleman Frederick Francois Oosthuizen from Meyerton Commando died from a gunshot wound resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle while his patrol was busy preparing an ambush position north of Oshakati. He was 20.

09 Feb 1987: 83492959BG Corporal Marius Viljoen from 2 Special Service Battalion was killed at the Rooisloot Training Terrain at Zeerust when his Eland armoured car overturned during training exercises. He suffered extensive internal injuries when he was thrown out of the hatch. He was 19.

09 Feb 1990: 86475867BG Rifleman Gerhard Paul Heine from 5 SAI was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at Umhlanga Rocks. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1973 –Col Robert Hugh Bathgate JOHNSTON, Dir, Mil Studies, Army, died on active service.

1976 – Stella Mary Beatrice SMITH, S Inf, RWS, died from multiple injuries in Andrew Fleming Hospital, Salisbury, aged 49.

1978 – Cst Cosmos MUKWAIRA, Uniform, BSAP, died on active service in Nuanetsi district, Op Repulse, aged 25.
