Today, 10 February, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

10 Feb 1972: 65451726E Lance Corporal James Charles Warren from 2 Squadron was killed in a aircraft ground mishap at the Squadron. He was in the process of removing an aircraft ejection seat when the drogue gun on the seat accidentally fired and he was fatally injured. He was 23.

10 Feb 1983: 78912359SP Rifleman Adao Salvador from 32 Battalion was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident, at Mosese. He was 22.

10 Feb 1994: 86403821PS Lieutenant Garth Harold Esterhuizen from 42 Squadron was killed when his Cessna 185A, Serial No. 720 crashed at Carletonville after flying into power lines during a low level cross country training flight. He was 23. 

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Cst Lot TAGWIRA, Uniform/GC, BSAP, was killed by terrorists in the Gwanda district, Op Tangent, aged 25 years. Lot had been sent out on patrol on 9 February on a bicycle in full district Uniform, serving papers on TV and radio licence defaulters, but failed to return four days later. A search for him proved negative and on 2 March his body was found by a local. He had been shot and it was subsequently established that a small group of terrorists had been seen in the area on the day he disappeared.

1978 – Sgt Fanuel Mustaph KATETE, GC, BSAP, died from wounds received in action, at the age of 30. (

1979 – Pte John DE KOCK, 1st Bn, RDR, died on active service aged 51 years.

1979 – Cst Charles NCUBE, R Tp, SU, BSAP, was killed in a CT action, at the age of 21.
