Today, 24 February, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

24 Feb 1980: 75014688PE Staff Sergeant Almerindo Mourão da Costa PMM from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment and former member of the Portuguese FLECHAS, an elite unit of the DGS in Angola He was Killed in Action during an undercover operation deep inside Angola when he detonated a booby-trap as his team walked into an enemy ambush while en-route to destroy an enemy target. He was 35.

24 Feb 1984: Special Warrant Officer Herman Hosea from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 28.

24 Feb 1987: 83289371BG Airman Nicolaas Wilhelmus Jacobus van Rheede van Oudtshoorn from Air Force Base Grootfontein died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained while serving at the Base. He was 19. 

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1970 – Rfn Leslie Blundell (aged 18), Depot RR, KOAS.

1970 – L/Cpl Nicholas Edwards (aged 27), Depot RR, KOAS.

1970 – Rfn James Fleming (aged 18), Depot RR, KOAS.
(The three RR soldiers above were all KOAS in a road accident near Lupane.)

1976 – Rfn Gerald Parkin (aged 19), Spt Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, KIA from gunshot wounds, Sangwe TTL, near Sabi West Tsetse Camp, Op Thrasher (VM158964). He was killed in one of several contacts that security forces had in on-going follow-up hot pursuit operations in this border area with Mozambique that resulted in 24 CTs being killed. Four other members of the security forces were injured.

1980 – Cst Philip Gondo (aged 43), Uniform BSAP, DOAS of a heart attack in Salisbury, Salops.
