Today, 12 June, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

12 Jun 1962: Two members from Central Flying School Dunnottar were killed instantly when their AT-6 Harvard, Serial No. 7161 struck the ground and disintegrated near Dunnottar while they were carrying out unauthorised low level aerobatics. The crew of the aircraft were:

  • PX/24853 2/Lieutenant (Pilot) Bruce Erroll Gaylard. He was 19.
  • T/11153 Air Mechanic (Pupil Pilot Under Training) Hermanus Lambertus Booysen. He was 18

12 Jun 1983: 71322556BT Staff Sergeant Donald Norman Coleby from Regiment Groot Karoo Died of Wounds 10 km south of Cuvelai. He, together with his whole company were lured into a well dug-in ambush by a group of SWAPO/PLAN insurgents from the ‘Typhoon Brigade”. In the process of withdrawing across the Cuvelai River, a Soviet 82mm mortar bomb landed next to him and exploded and he was riddled with shrapnel. He succumbed to his wounds while being evacuated to the medical point just north of Mupa. He was 27.

12 Jun 1983: Special Constable K Kambirua from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 26.

12 Jun 1989: 86274743BG Private Clive Dean MacKenzie from 1 Maintenance Unit was killed instantly when he was electrocuted after accidentally touching overhead high tension wires at the Bulkop Railway Station while in the process of offloading military supplies. He was 18.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1977 – Lance Corporal Arthur HOLMES, 3 Protection Company, RHU, Rhodesian Defence Regiment, died on active service. Died aged 18 years. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.

1977 – District Security Assistant Amos MAPUNDO, Keep Protection, Intaf, killed on active service. Killed in Bikita, Op Repulse.

1977 – Private Derek Charles MCKOP, 3 Protection Company, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident, aged 24 years. Buried in the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo.

1977 – Corporal Mugara Zakaria MHUKA, K Company, 1st Battalion, RAR, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1977 – Private Stanley NCUBE, 1st Battalion, RAR, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1977 – Constable Edson SIBANDA, Uniform BSAP, KIA. Killed in an ambush in the Bikita area, at the age of 23. His private funeral took place at Nuanetsi on16 June. Attested 12 Jul 1973.

1977 – Rifleman Alistair MacDonald WILSON, National Service, Army, died on active service.

1978 – 2nd Lieutenant Fabio Giovanni FALZOI, 1 Commando, 1st Battalion, RLI, KIA. Killed on Op Elbow in Zambia in a contact with the Zambian Army.

1978 – Field Reservist Kenneth KAWADZA, Police Reserve, BSAP, KIA. Died from wounds received in a vehicle ambush in the Diti TTL, Beitbridge area, Op Tangent. A combined police/Intaf patrol was traveling between the BSAP base at Tshiturapadzi and Beitbridge when they were ambushed. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury on 14 June.

1978 – Private S. SIBANDA, 8th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service. Accidental shooting.

1979 – Private Simon CHISORA, 1st Battalion, RAR, KIA. Killed in a CT action.
