Today, 24 June, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

24 Jun 1978: 74316852BG Private Anton Nel from 1 Satellite Radar Station at Mariepskop died from head injuries received in a private motor vehicle accident, approximately 10 km south of the Strydom Tunnel on the Orighstad - Hoedspruit Road. He was returning to his unit after being on leave. He was 20.

24 Jun 1980: 79200606BG Private Michael Johannes Range from the South African Defence Force Institute (SADFI/SAWI) in Pietersburg was killed when the military vehicle in which he was travelling, overturned 26 km from Messina on the Louis Trichardt-Messina Road after the front tyre suffered a blow-out. He was 18.

24 Jun 1983: 80214372BG Corporal George Louis Steytler from 1 Parachute Battalion Died of Wounds after being critically wounded in the head when his Patrol TB was attacked by a FAPLA/Cuban force while in an area approximately 38km from Cahama. He succumbed to his wounds while on the Casevac helicopter ferry flight back to AFB Ondangwa. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1972 – Rifleman Jeffrey Linton BALDWIN, Depot, Rhodesian Regiment, killed on active service. Died in Salisbury Central Hospital from severe head injuries. He was 18 years old and was cremated at Warren Hills, Salisbury.

1973 – Private Jere MANASO, D Company, 1st Battalion, RAR, KIA. Died aged 30 from a gunshot wound, Dande TTL, Sipolilo, Op Hurricane.

1978 – Field Reservist Moffat EBESTOR, Police Reserve, BSAP, killed on active service. Died in a vehicle accident on the Banket-Raffingora road. A Malawian by birth, Moffat was a PATU Grade A tracker. He was buried on Raffingora Estates on 27 June. Sergeant Hatikuri DZOBO was also killed in this accident.

1978 – Corporal J. ELIAS (not his surname), 6 Comp Squadron, Rhodesian Corps of Engineers, killed on active service. Died of multiple shrapnel wounds from a Security Forces explosives blast.

1979 – Guard C. MBEMI, RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Guard N. MUPANDAGWARA, RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Guard J. MUPONDERA, RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Guard C. MUSHURE, RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Guard C. PILLOW (not his surname), RHQ Alpha, Op Hurricane, Guard Force, died on active service.

1979 – Dip Attendant John NDEBELE, Intaf, murdered. Killed by CT’s.
