Today, 28 June, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

28 Jun 1975: 72225709N Private Gerhard Erasmus Smith De Beer from 1 Maintenance Unit was killed in a military vehicle accident in Grootfontein. He was 18.

28 Jun 1986: 84723014HN Rifleman Geelbooi Zamblenzini Mthimunye from 115 Battalion was murdered at Weltevrede after being attacked by persons unknown and burned to death. He was 20.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1976 – Dip Attendant TAUNDI, ADF, Intaf, murdered. Killed by CTs.

1977 – Field Reservist David Eric "Tug" CAREY, Police Reserve, BSAP, KIA. Died in a vehicle ambush, Kariba district, Op Hurricane, aged 34 years. The vehicle carrying Kariba PATU members was returning from training when the ambush occurred. His cremation service was held in Salisbury on 4 July.

1977 – Corporal George Douglas SWAN, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, killed on active service. Accidental mortar explosion, Mukumbura, Op Hurricane. A mortar fired at CTs from the BSAP camp hit a tree above his head, exploded and resulted in his death.

1979 – Lance Corporal Richard MAWORERA, 1st Battalion, RAR, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1979 – Police Reserve (Observer) John REVILL, PRAW, BSAP, KIA. Shot by ground fire. John was the door gunner in a Police Reserve Air Wing Cessna 180 tail dragger. The PRAW team was on a routine patrol flight when they spotted a group of CTs. They fired on the group who returned fire, fatally wounding John in the head. The pilot returned to the FAF4 airfield at Mt Darwin, where John was carried off the aircraft unconscious. A camp medic attempted to stabilize John and performed CPR on him but sadly he died on the apron of the runway as a result of his head wound. He was 41 years old. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 4 July.
