Today, 30 June, we salute and honour the following men & woman who sacrificed their lives whilst standing in the defence of what they held dear at the time and against evil and tyranny.

SOUTH AFRICAN BORDER WAR

30 Jun 1980: 79581435PE Corporal Theo Bence van Niekerk from 1 Reconnaissance Regiment died from a gunshot accidentally sustained while at Fort Doppies, Caprivi Strip. He was 22.

30 Jun 1986: 84701994HN Rifleman Poyiki Wilfred Mahlangu from 115 Battalion was murdered at Weltevrede by persons unknown. He was attacked and assaulted before being burned to death. He was 28.

30 Jun 1986: Rifleman L.N.D. Jonas from 101 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a Contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Southern Angola near the Cut-line. He was 26.

30 Jun 1992: Four members from 9 SAI were killed when their Samil 20 vehicle overturned at Middelrust. The casualties were:

  • 85064053PC Sergeant Clinton Donavan Elliot. He was 25
  • 91062364CK Lance Corporal Cleston Beukes. He was 19.
  • 91065755CK Rifleman Jacobus Adams. He was 24.
  • 90955428CK Rifleman Aubrey John Ruiter. He was 19.

RHODESIAN BUSH WAR

1971 – Lance Corporal Alistair John KERSWELL, 1st Battalion, RLI, killed on active service. Died in Salisbury Central Hospital from injuries received in an accident, at the age of 22. Buried at Warren Hills, Salisbury.

1977 – District Assistant Edward SIBANDA , Regular Intaf, murdered. Killed by CTs.

1979 – Private Alfred Albert MALGAST, 1st Battalion, Rhodesia Defence Regiment, died on active service. Died aged 25 years, he is buried at the Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury.

1979 – Constable Willard NYAPFUMBI, Uniform BSAP, KIA. Killed in a CT action, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane, at the age of 23. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 6 July. See also Sergeant D. Chibaya.

1979 – Private Patrick TSIKUYADZI, A Company, 5th Battalion, Rhodesia Regiment, KIA. Killed in a CT action.

1979 – Sergeant Darius CHIBAYA [Bronze Baton for Bravery] (1973), Uniform BSAP, KIA. Killed in a CT action, Mt Darwin, Op Hurricane, at the age of 30. He was awarded the Commissioner's Commendation whilst still a constable in 1973, for his efforts in the Op Hurricane area. His semi-military funeral was held at Warren Hills Cemetery, Salisbury, on 6 July. Attested 15 Oct 1967. Source: Outpost (BSAP journal). See also Constable W. Nyapfumbi.

1979 – District Security Assistant Beaton CHIRUME, Keep Protection, Intaf, died on active service.

1979 – Sergeant Bernard KANYEMBA, C Troop, ARU, Intaf, KIA. Killed near Karoi, Op Hurricane.
