On 23 November 1977, an armada of helicopters and airplanes took off from Rhodesian airbases and crossed the border into Mozambique. Their objective: to attack the headquarters of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, where thousands of enemy forces were concentrated. Codenamed Operation Dingo, the raid was planned to coincide with a meeting of Robert Mugabe and his war council at the targeted HQ.

It would be the biggest conflict of the Rhodesian Bush War. In this fascinating account, Ian Pringle describes the political and military backdrop leading up to the operation, and he tells the story of the battle through the eyes of key personalities who planned, led and participated in it. Using his own experience as a jet and helicopter pilot and skydiver, he recreates the battle in detail, explaining the performance of men and machines in the unfolding drama of events.

DINGO FIRESTORM is a fresh, gripping recreation of a major battle in southern African military history.

Dingo Firestorm

This is an absolute must. I found the way the story is put together was most fascinating almost as though it was written as a movie. I have read many of the Rhodesiana books and this is in a class of its own with the intricate detail of the briefings and orders given to the soldiers and airmen, to the finer detail of what must have been a logistical nightmare. Respect to all involved. Rhodesians never die.

A seriously good read!

This book provides a good theoretical background to the Rhodesian Bush War and then cones like the tip of a bullet to focus specifically on the entire Operation Dingo adventure and those that took part, from start to finish. Author, Ian Pringle appears to have been fortunate enough to get one-on-one interviews with many of the protagonists prior to them passing on. Each of their recollections therefore are 'from the horse’s mouth" and offer a more personal account of the event.
As someone with more than a passing interest in the Zimbabwe / Rhodesia history, but knew little of Op Dingo prior, Pringle's writing had me thoroughly engaged throughout. I had it read a lot quicker than I expected mind you, but then I was reading it with a great deal of fervour for 2-3 hour stretches every night. I was only disappointed I finished it! Put simply, this is a great book, well researched, written and presented. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in world politics, Southern Africa, modern warfare and the story of Rhodesia as a whole. You will not be disappointed. Five stars!

Fascinating Read, Great Insight, Do Get It!

I highly recommend this book as it is a fascinating page turner, as well as giving an overall explanation, and a fair account, of the marxist led insurgency. Do not be misled by the title as it is not just about a major battle, breath-sucking though that was to read. Amazingly courageous soldiers, considering the lack of military equipment (helicopters etc), weapons, ammunition, fuel etc with which to conduct a defence of isolated farm households against a globally supported ever expanding terrorist enemy including the presence of Soviet trainers in bordering countries (The Soviet Union, Communist China in particular).
This was not a genuine military against military war, but terrorist hit and run against extremely isolated farming families including women and children, including landmines being dug into the ground right in front of their farm gates. Now some countries supporting these terrorists in one way or another, have been themselves on the experiencing end of terror attacks. Be careful what you approve and support - what goes around, comes around.
It was an added bonus to read about my good friend from our Livingstone days, Cocky Benecke and his accomplishments.
