Lest We Forget... 1 July

On 01 July, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

01 Jul 1968: Two members from Central Flying School Dunnottar were killed when their AT-6 Harvard 7386 struck High Tension Cables shortly after take-off from CFS Dunnottar. They were:

01238625PE Captain Ernest Lodewicus Groenewald. He was 27

65636458PE 2/Lieutenant Anton Fick Bosch. He was 21

01 Jul 1970: Two South African Nationals serving with 7 Squadron Rhodesian Air Force, were killed when their Alouette III B Helicopter R5117 inexplicably rolled onto its back and crashed as it approached to land at New Sarum. The casualties were:

4053 Squadron Leader Gordon Edward Nettleton. He was 40.

4077 Flight Lieutenant Michael Richard Hill. He was 29.

01 Jul 1982: 78214962BG 2/Lieutenant Campbell Uys from 32 Battalion died of injuries sustained in an accidental firing of an R1 Assault Rifle while stationed at Buffalo Base. He was 19.

01 Jul 1983: Two men from 7 SAI were killed from 7 SAI was Killed in a private vehicle accident near Warmbaths while traveling home at night for a weekend when their vehicle drove into the rear of a trailer/caravan without lights. . The two passengers in the rear of the vehicle survived the crash. The Casualties were:

Corporal Hans de Jager. He was 20.

01 Jul 1983: 79437612BG Sapper Andries Petrus Burger from 1 Construction Regiment was killed when he was accidentally run over by a heavy construction vehicle during construction site preparation work at Marievale near Dunnottar. He was 19.

01 Jul 1983: Two members from 32 Battalion were Killed in Action during a contact with enemy forces in Southern Angola during Ops Dolfyn. They were:

78226370PE Sergeant Gerrit Hendrik Du Rand. He was 21

83706069SP Rifleman Edwin Kasera. He was 23

01 Jul 1983: 76554898BT Rifleman Johannes Albertus Wessels from Regiment Christiaan Beyers died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained while at Vhembe Base. He was 23.

01 Jul 1986: 83411314BG Rifleman Gavin Bazil Glinski from 7 SAI was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Ackornhoek. He was 18.

01 Jul 1989: 86245354BG 2/Lieutenant Nikolaos Sataras from Group 13 was killed in a private motor vehicle accident at Gravelotte near Tzaneen while on official duty. He was 19.

01 Jul 1999: 96700257PV Able Seaman Bronwyn Mark Marsh from the South African Navy was serving with 4 Special Forces Regiment when he was Reported Missing on the night of 01 July 1999 while participating in a night exercise. Despite an intensive search of the area, nothing more was heard from him until 14 July 1999 when a search team patrolling the coastline, found his body washed ashore at the 16-Mile Beach beyond Yzerfontein. He was 23.

01 Jul 2018: 01 Jul 2018: Four members from the Natal Carbineers were killed and 7 others injured when their SAMIL 20 vehicle overturned while enroute to the Boschhoek Training Area in Kwazulu Natal. The casualties were:

Corporal M.S. Lushozi

Private M.S.T. Funeka

Private S. Padayachee

Private K.M. Zondi

Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
