10 March, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
10 Mar 1970: 67526913E Corporal Hermanus Stephanus van der Merwe from the Northern Air Defence Sector at Devon was killed while travelling in a military bus that was part of a convoy en-route to Devon. The military bus left the road near Fort Mistake in the Newcastle area and overturned. He was 18.
10 Mar 1982: 79930071SP Rifleman Joao Baptista from 32 Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident near Rundu. He was 26.
10 Mar 1986: 79861498HV Rifleman Pinecas Amupolo from 101 Battalion SWATF Died of Wounds received after his Samil 100 Kwévoël vehicle was hit by a Soviet RPG-7 Anti-Tank Rocket. He was 25.
10 Mar 1987: 67410183PE Flight Sergeant Nico Frikkie Eloff from Air Force Base Waterkloof was boarded as medically unfit and honourably discharged on 31 May 1987. Sadly, his medical condition worsened and he died on 10 March 1987. He was 36.
10 Mar 1988: 74500463BT Rifleman Lodewickus Johannes Moolman from Regiment Bloemspruit was accidentally killed when he was attacked and trampled to death by an enraged elephant while on foot patrol near the Nwamedzi Base in the Kruger National Park. He was 29.
10 Mar 1999: 95093472PV Rifleman Mpumalanga Nkwashu from 21 Battalion died of disease. He was 28.
10 Mar 2000: 76928209PE Lance Corporal Faustino Caliva from 5 Special Forces died from injuries sustained during bad parachute landing. He was 45.
Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
