Lest We Forget... 13 June

13 June, let us pause to remember this young man from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

13 Jun 1953: 640144 Superintendent Bertram Cecil Browning from the European Army Auxiliary Services died in 1 Military Hospital at Voortrekkerhoogte after suffering a heart attack. He was 51.

13 Jun 1953: MPO33881 Captain Edward Sydney Millar from Army Headquarters was boarded as medically unfit due to ailments he had contracted while serving in the Army. He was later admitted to 1 Military Hospital in Voortrekkerhoogte suffering from hypertension and diabetes where he sadly succumbed after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. He was 67.

13 Jun 1973: 61286936E Captain Anthonie Johannes Brits from 8 Squadron was killed when his AT-6 Harvard 7135 appeared to stall and spin into the ground near Bloemfontein while rolling in onto a target during an air-to-ground weapons delivery exercise. He was 28.

13 Jun 1975: 70476437N Corporal Timothy Chadwick from 6 SAI was accidentally killed while busy building an Observation Post near Bagani. While in the process of felling a tree with a chain saw to make space for the bunker, the tree unfortunately fell in the wrong direction and fell on top of him, partly severing his arm. Despite immediate medical attention, the medical personnel were unable to stem the bleeding and he bled to death. He was 19.

13 Jun 1983: 79080479 Corporal Johannes Jean Arendse from the South African Cape Corps was killed in a private motor vehicle accident at Swellendam. He was 25.

13 Jun 1998: Two members from the South African Infantry Corps were killed at Mabopane after being fatally shot by persons unknown. The casualties were:

97242283 Rifleman C A Malemela. He was. 23

97239438 Rifleman G T Mogolola. He was 22

Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten
