13 May, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
13 May 1964: P/49773 Rifleman Paul Jacobus Krogh from 1 Parachute Battalion was killed after he was accidentally shot in the chest with a .38 revolver by another soldier while in the barracks at Tempe, Bloemfontein. He was 20.
13 May 1981: 81502684PP Rifleman Mike Williams from the South African Intelligence Corps was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident, at Madimbo. He was 21.
13 May 1982: 81564692PP Lance Corporal M.S. Mngomo from 701 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 22.
13 May 1992: 90078726BW Rifleman Thiago Pontes from 31 Battalion died at Schmidtsdrift as a result of pancreatitis and liver failure. He was 31.
13 May 1994: 92658038PY Private Paulus Bushy Mabele from North West Command Maintenance Unit was granted a day pass to go to collect his school certificate and was later found dead at his home as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head using a private firearm. He was 24.
13 May 1996: 82703863PE Corporal Molefi Phillip Khala from 21 Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident at Lenz when the military vehicle in which he was traveling as a passenger overturned. He was 34.
13 May 1998: 76288083PE Petty Officer M D Kok from Naval Base Simonstown suffered a heart attack and was rushed to 2 Military Hospital where he sadly succumbed. He was 31.
13 May 1998: 94065091PF Corporal Molefe Mbuzwana from the South African Infantry Corps died of disease in 1 Military Hospital. He was 25.
13 May 2001: 95218012PF Corporal Mabise Maphothoma from 21 Battalion was killed in a military vehicle accident at Soshanguve. He was 29.
Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
