Lest We Forget... 19 July

On 19 July, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

19 Jul 1966: Warrant Officer Class 1 Leonard Stuart Menteath Jackson from the Technical Service Corps was critically injured on 11 July 1966 when his private motor vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with another civilian in Robertsham, Johannesburg. He was admitted to the South Rand Hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries on 19 July 1966. He was 50. His Son-in-Law, Mr Walter Flasehart was killed in the same accident.

19 Jul 1969: 05579644 Air Mechanic Michael Anthony Louw from 2 Squadron was killed when his private motor vehicle was involved in a collision with a bus near Rietfontein in Pretoria. He was 24.

19 Jul 1974: 72349541BA Private Jan Johannes Herculas Christoffel Myburgh from the Technical Service Corps Training Centre was critically injured in a private motor vehicle accident on 12 July 1974 on the Old Johannesburg Road while on his way home to Elandsfontein for the weekend. He was admitted to 1 Military Hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries on 19 July 1974. He was 18.

19 Jul 1982: 66438979PE Sergeant Jacobus Lodewikus Buitendag from the Northern Transvaal Command Provost Unit suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Pretoria. He was 32.

19 Jul 1993: Staff Sergeant Rhinus Nieuhaus from 44 Parachute Regiment was accidentally killed when his parachute failed during a practice free-fall jump at the General de Wet Training Area. He was 25.

19 Jul 1998: 05479993PE Warrant Officer Class I Petrus Paulus van Zyl from Special Forces Headquarters died of disease in 1 Military Hospital. He was 42.

Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten
