02 February, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
02 Feb 1951: C/166382 Lance Corporal McKay Trompetter, a driver serving in the Cape Corps died of tuberculosis in 1 Military Hospital. He was 34.
02 Feb 1961: SS126/4044 Flying Officer Eric George Cary, a South National serving with 1 Squadron Royal Rhodesian Air Force, was killed when his Royal Rhodesian Air Force Vampire FB9, Serial RRAF104 crashed on Milsonia Farm at Que Que during a training exercise. He was 24.
02 Feb 1973: 63097208E Captain Leslie John Marshall from Air Force Base Langebaanweg was Killed when his Atlas MB326M Impala Mk I, Serial No 485 crashed at the Somersveld Military Airfield about 17 km North East of Darling while he was practicing low level aerobatics. He was 26.
02 Feb 1979: 73241226PE Corporal Anton van Wyngaardt from 4 SAI was killed in a private motorcycle accident in Middelburg (Transvaal) while on official duty. He was 21.
02 Feb 1980: 76495795BG Rifleman Willem Johannes Gerhardus Uys Olivier from 7 SAI was killed when his Buffel Troop Carrier overturned at Ondangwa. He was 19.
02 Feb 1980: 76439033BG Signaler Hendrik Petrus Johannes Fouché from 2 Signal Regiment was critically injured on 01 February 1980 when the private motor vehicle in which he was traveling as a passenger was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry carrying cement pipes between Bloemfontein and Winburg while travelling home on a weekend pass. He was admitted to 3 Military Hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries on 02 February 1980. Two other members that were traveling in the vehicle with him were killed instantly in the crash. He was 19.
02 Feb 1981: 79013876PE Sergeant Petré Christiaan Brand from the Western Province Command Signals Unit attached to the Army Battle School was killed in a private motor vehicle accident at Somerset West while on his way home from work. He was 35.
02 Feb 1981: 70438304BG Lieutenant (Doctor) Wolfgang Joachim Trinkl from the South African Medical Corps was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. He was 26.
02 Feb 1982: 78245263BG Lance Corporal Johnny Attilla Nemith from 7 SAI was killed in a military vehicle accident at Hazyview when one of the tyres burst causing the vehicle to overturn. He was 19.
02 Feb 1984: 83890996SWK Rifleman Joshua Sitarara from 202 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN Insurgents. He was 24.
02 Feb 1986: Leading Seaman Calvin Rennie Boyd from the General Naval Workshops at Wingfield accidentally drowned off Bloubergstrand whilst restrained in an overturned paddle-ski. Despite all efforts by life savers, Metro EMS Western Cape & Doctors, he was declared dead on arrival at the Tygerberg Hospital. He was off duty at the time of his death. He was 25.
02 Feb 1989: 84064559HC Rifleman Christian Le Wack from Group 39 was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident, at Bloemfontein. He was 29.
02 Feb 1991: 89954887CK Private Kelvin Adam Kogana from the South African Ordnance Services Corps attached to Western Province Command Maintenance Unit died in the Tygerberg Hospital from multiple injuries sustained when he was struck by a civilian motor vehicle on Vasco Boulevard. He was 21.
02 Feb 1992: 89096655BW Rifleman Benjamin Boorman from 3 SAI was accidentally shot dead by a fellow soldier during riot control operations at Mpophoweni Township. He was 23.
02 Feb 1998: 94072618 Rifleman M S Lambula from 111 Battalion died of disease in the Nelspruit Infirmary. He was 25.
02 Feb 1999: 74344029PE Warrant Officer Class II Johannes Dawid Jordaan from the South African Army was found dead at his home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was 40.
02 Feb 2005: Major Cedric Paul Alexander Mullany from Air Force Headquarters was killed in a private motorcycle accident in Pretoria while on his way home from work. He was 34.
Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
