22 June, let us pause to remember the following young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
22 Jun 1960: P/22956 Air Mechanic William Matthew Mauer from 1 Air Depot was found dead at his home. His death was a result of cyanide poisoning. No foul play was suspected. He was 31.
22 Jun 1963: Pioneer Willem Abraham Erasmus from the Army Service Corps died of kidney cancer in 1 Military Hospital. He was 54.
22 Jun 1984: 84076322CK Rifleman Andries Kees from the South African Cape Corps died from a gunshot wound accidentally sustained while deployed in the Operational Area. He was 18.
22 Jun 1985: 76910215SP Corporal Johannes Gobe from 201 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents near the Cut-line. He was 29.
22 Jun 1987: 83435586 Airman John Liam Corrigan from the Lowveld Airspace Control Sector was killed while standing Guard Duty at Mariepskop when he was shot dead by another soldier who was apparently high on dagga at the time of the incident. He was 20.
22 Jun 1990: 86216512BG Signaler Ronald Leon Wheeler from Group 10 was killed in a military vehicle accident at Umkomaas. He was 20.
22 Jun 1994: Sergeant Leon Johann Tischendorf from 68 Air School died of disease in 1 Military hospital. He was 41.
22 Jun 1998: 94205119 Corporal M S Magoro from Air Force Headquarters was killed in a shooting incident at Mamelodi. He was 21.
22 Jun 1998: 94752961 Rifleman M P Molose from 121 Battalion died of disease in the Garankua Hospital. He was 28.
22 Jun 2004: Staff Sergeant Hans Van Wyk from the South African Infantry Corps was killed in a private motor vehicle accident. He was 36.
Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
