Lest We Forget... 22 March

22 March, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

22 Mar 1965: P17998 Flight Sergeant Louis Bernberg from 35 Squadron was found dead in the Squadron Headquarters at Air Force Base Ysterplaat with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was 26.

22 Mar 1982: 77257194BG Rifleman Michael Bruce Lubbe from 1 Parachute Battalion was killed when his private motor vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with another motor vehicle near Winburg at 03h00 in the morning. He was returning to Bloemfontein from Johannesburg after a weekend pass. He was 21.

22 Mar 1993: Three APLA operatives stormed the Yellowwoods Hotel in Uitenhage and opened fire on staff and patrons with AK-47 Assault Rifles and hand grenades killing one University Student. The APLA operatives Vuyisile Madasi, (also one of those responsible for the attack on the Heidelberg Tavern on 30.12.1993), Lungisa Ntintili (also one of those responsible for the attack at the King William’s Town Golf Club on 28 November 1992) and Nkopane Diaho-Moneng were all granted amnesty in 1998. The civilian casualty who died in this attack was:

22 Mar 1993: A civilian motorist was killed when three APLA operatives opened fire with AK-47 Assault Rifles rifles on the vehicle in which he was travelling on the Vereeniging to Vanderbijlpark road. The three APLA operatives were later granted amnesty during 1998. The civilian who died in this attack was:
