Lest We Forget... 22 October

22 October, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

22 Oct 1977: 72010887PE Sergeant Fritz Johan Lane from the South African Ordnance Corps attached to 1 SAI was killed in a private motor vehicle accident approximately 10 km from Oudtshoorn on the Oudtshoorn to De Rust Road. He had just dropped his mother off in Oudtshoorn and was returning to Bloemfontein when the accident occurred. He was 37.

22 Oct 1983: Lance Corporal Roger Wrighton Cook from the Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing accidentally drowned at Richards Bay during a weekend R & R break while deployed with 92 Tactical Airfield Unit at Mkuze. His body was found washed ashore four days later and subsequently recovered. He was 25.

22 Oct 1986: 82391780BG Corporal Pieter Johannes Jacobus Meisenheimer from the Army Gymnasium was critically injured when his Bedford Water Tanker overturned at Heidelberg. He was admitted to the A.G. Visser Hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries no long after admission. He was 20.

22 Oct 1990: 87491155PE Airman Oliver Kallman from Air Force Base Durban was killed in a private motor vehicle accident approximately 3 km from Vrede on the Vrede to Memel road while returning to his Unit. He was 18.

22 Oct 1992: 91075820CK Rifleman Johannes Albertus Mostert from 9 SAI was killed after sustaining multiple chest injuries when a Samil 20 truck rolled down a steep embankment, near Table Mountain in Natal. He was 19.

22 Oct 1998: 6718804PV Midshipman Roderick Marais from Naval Base Simonstown was critically injured in a private motor vehicle accident in Cape Town while off duty. He was admitted to 2 Military Hospital at Wynberg where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. He was 22.

22 Oct 1998: 86322633PE Sergeant Albert Gerald Campbell Thompson from the Personnel Service Corps was accidentally killed when he was hit by a train in Pretoria He was 29.

Their names and sacrifices have not been forgotten.
