Lest We Forget... 27 January

27 January, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

27 Jan 1981: 78012226PR Staff Sergeant Marius Jacobus Snyman from the South African Corps of Engineers attached to South West Africa Command died from leukemia in the Windhoek State Hospital. He was 58.

27 Jan 1984: 80519424BG Corporal Johannes Adam De Beer from 8 SAI was Killed in Action when he stepped on a Soviet PMN-1 (Black Widow) Anti-Personnel Mine while on Patrol in Southern Angola. He was 19.

27 Jan 1984: Special Constable Paulino Kangombe from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 32.

27 Jan 1984: 76395680BG Trooper Deon Christiaan Ollewagen from 1 Special Service Battalion was killed in a private motor vehicle accident between Orkney and Klerksdorp. He was 23.

27 Jan 1993: 88087994 Rifleman Cecil Patrick Mekgoe from 3 SAI died from unknown causes. He was 23.

27 Jan 1998: 96673975 Corporal D E Sibiya from 11 SAI died from tuberculosis in the Umbombo Hospital at Jozini while being Absent Without Leave (AWOL) from his Unit. He was 24.

27 Jan 2000: 96214127PV Gunner Mashudu Alson Mulovhedzi from 10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment was accidentally killed in Nelspruit when he was struck by a civilian motor vehicle while offloading road block equipment during a deployment. He was 25.

Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
