Lest We Forget... 28 June

On 28 June, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.

28 Jun 1950: MPO91733 Warrant Officer Class I Andries Stephanus Roux from 1 Air Depot was boarded as medically unfit but unfortunately suffered a heart attack and died later in 1 Military hospital. He was 54.

28 Jun 1975: 72225709N Private Gerhard Erasmus Smith De Beer from 1 Maintenance Unit was killed in a military vehicle accident when his Bedford water tanker hit a bridge stanchion on the road from Grootfontein to Rundu. He was 18.

28 Jun 1978: 66014531PE Sergeant Willem Gerhardus Coetzee, a chef from Air Force Base Ysterplaat suffered a heart attack and later died in 2 Military Hospital. He was 51.

28 Jun 1978: 74418773BG Private Geoffrey Robert Plekker from 101 Base Workshops in Grootfontein was accidentally killed in Grootfontein when he was struck and run over by a civilian vehicle while jogging. He was 21.

28 Jun 1979: 75531879BG Rifleman Kevin John Tree from 6 SAI was critically injured in a private motorcycle accident between Grahamstown and East London on 22 June 1979. He was admitted to hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries on 28 June 1979. He was 20.

28 Jun 1986: 84723014HN Rifleman Geelbooi Zamblenzini Mthimunye from 115 Battalion was murdered at Weltevrede after being attacked by persons unknown and burned to death. He was 20.

28 Jun 1997: 87767703PE Sergeant Nkosana Solomon Mokoena from Group 17 Headquarters died from injuries after being severely assaulted by unknown persons during an intelligence information gathering exercise in Mayfair, Johannesburg. He was 35.

Their names and sacrifices will not be forgotten.
