29 November, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
29 Nov 1974: 67287482E Corporal Allan Geoffrey Becker from the Technical Service Corps attached to Regiment Noord Transvaal was accidentally killed while servicing a military vehicle in Leydsdorp when the vehicle slipped off the jacks and crushed him. He was 24.
29 Nov 1982: 78539293BG Rifleman Jean Louis Moerdyk from the SWA SPES (Equestrian) was killed in a military vehicle accident at Bagani. He was 20.
29 Nov 1984: Private Cornelis Jordaan from the Directorate Military Intelligence (DMI) was killed in a private motor vehicle accident. He was 18.
29 Nov 1986: 82258641PE Gunner Gerrit Meintjies from 4 Artillery Regiment was killed in a private vehicle accident on the Potgietersrus road while he was on vacation leave. He was 20.
29 Nov 1987: 84558303BG Private Alexander Talbat Nelson Sadler from 101 Base Workshops was critically injured in South Eastern Angola during Operation Modular when he accidentally fell off the back of a military vehicle while on route to Mavinga with a repair team and was driven over by a Kwêvoël supply vehicle. He suffered massive internal injuries and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries before he could be medically evacuated. He was 19.
29 Nov 1994: 85298073PY Corporal Willem Daniel Jones from 44 Parachute Regiment was killed in a private motor vehicle accident approximately 10 km outside Luckhoff, while on leave. He was 25.
29 Nov 1994: 87771796PE Rifleman Jacob Theletsane from 21 Battalion was killed in a military motor vehicle accident at Jozini. He was 23.
29 Nov 1995: 90308842PE Corporal Pierre Venter from 7 Medical Battalion Group and a member of the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE), died from hypothermia after he lost his way in a blizzard. He was later found dead by the rescue team about 150m from the main base at Vesleskarvet. He was 22.
29 Nov 1995: 87070967PE Rifleman David Jerome Booysen from 9 SAI was killed in a military vehicle accident in Springs. He was 27.
29 Nov 1998: 93658524 Rifleman G S Sukazi from 121 Battalion was found dead in Wesselton with a bullet wound in the head. He was 29.
Their names and sacrifices have not been forgotten.
