07 September, let us pause for a minute to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
07 Sep 1977: 77880235SP Rifleman J.M. Maquinda from 32 Battalion died from a gunshot wound, accidentally self-inflicted while on operations in Southern Angola. He was 30.
07 Sep 1978: 65658270PE Major Lukas Gerhardus Grundling from 1 Parachute Battalion accidentally drowned at Wepener during a parachute jump with full kit in the early hours of the morning at the start of D Companies Conventional training. He landed in the deep end of a farm dam and became entangled with his kit rope. The prevailing wind caused the parachute to drag him under the water. Although he did surface a few times shouting for assistance, by the time help arrived, he had already drowned. He was 29.
07 Sep 1986: 85224475BG Private Shaun Anthony Sprowson from 16 Maintenance Unit was killed when his SAMAC Horse and Trailer overturned on the Rundu to Bagani Road. He was 20.
07 Sep 1988: W404319N Constable Hermanus Cornelius Johannes Du Plessis from the South West Africa Police Counter-Insurgency Wing: Ops-K Division (Koevoet) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 27.
07 Sep 1992: 89280820BG Rifleman Johannes Lodewyk Bouwer Lourens from 4 SAI was killed in a Military Vehicle Accident at White River. He was 18.
Their names and sacrifice have not been forgotten.
