On 09 July, let us pause to remember these young men from our Generation who answered the Sunset call.
09 Jul 1979: 76312248BG Rifleman Stephanus Petrus Janse van Vuuren from SWA SPES (Equestrian) (SWATF) was Killed in Action when his horse detonated an Anti-Tank Mine while on patrol along the pipeline North of Etale. He was 18.
09 Jul 1980: 80880198HX Rifleman H. Muhenje from 37 Battalion (Later 102 Battalion SWATF) was Killed in Action during a contact with SWAPO/PLAN insurgents in Northern Owamboland. He was 26.
09 Jul 1985: 80622079BW Corporal Pieter Apollis from the South African Cape Corps attached to 53 Battalion was accidentally killed after being struck by a bullet resulting from an accidental discharge of a fellow soldiers rifle. He was 24.
09 Jul 1988: 81966137SWH Corporal M. Kavetu from 102 Battalion SWATF was Killed in Action during a contact with insurgents when he triggered a trip-wire activated Soviet POMZ-2M Anti-Personnel Picket Mine. He was 27. Corporal Kavetu was the last Operational Casualty of 102 Battalion SWATF during the Bush War.
09 Jul 1994: 90800210HB Rifleman Mojaleta Phillip Maarogawye from 115 Battalion was shot dead by persons unknown while getting out of a taxi in Kagiso. He was 29.
09 Jul 1998: 94838034 Rifleman Sello Jonas Lethae from 21 Battalion was admitted to the Natalspruit Hospital with serious head and neck injuries after being assaulted by persons unknown on 06 July 1998. He sadly succumbed to his injuries on 09 July 1998. He was 27.
