Michael Patrick Murphy (May 7, 1976 – June 28, 2005) was a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_SEALs">United States Navy SEAL officer who was awarded the U.S. military's highest decoration, the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor">Medal of Honor, for his actions during the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Afghanistan_(2001%E2%80%932021)">War in Afghanistan. He was the first member of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy">United States Navy (USN) to receive the award since the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War">Vietnam War.

Lt. Murphy was killed on 28 June 2005 during Operation Red Wings. He had left cover and moved to a clearing away from the mountains, exposing himself to enemy fire in order to obtain a signal for his satellite phone to contact headquarters, relay the situation and request help.

Lt. Murphy was shot 14 times, but was able to make it back to cover.
